Somar Jbawi // Recalling Home – Movies on Rails // July-September 2018

During the course of the project with Somar Jbawi, CAT Cologne will be showing films of his program „Movies on Rails“. The program gives insights to the Syrian crisis at its closest range, where the heavily haunted Syrian cities become the hero of many untold stories, where death and life go hand in hand in a surreal game of fate. The madness of the omnipresent war dominates almost every perspective of the films, even if indirectly. The program puts a spotlight on the human aspect of the Syrian crisis through 7 short films. The program gives insights to the civil war in Syria at closest range, where the lifes of the many immediately affected people are threatened, but also aims to bridge the dialogue towards the challenges caused by this conflict for the local society.

‘In 2015, Europe witnessed the biggest wave of refugees wetting their feet on its shores since WWII. Germany took a historical decision to open the doors for them. Thousands of them rushed through the borders looking for safety and rescuing their own lives. Their guide to Germany was the trains rails. They left their houses, past, and their once-happy lives, and went into the unknown.

Their untold stories followed them…’
– Somar Jbawi, Founder of MORS
